El Salvador

While there has been progress in the transition towards democracy in El Salvador, many of the socio-economic problems that led to the war remain, and the current levels of crime and violence risk placing the country into a downward spiral that compromises the democratic advances of the post-war period.   Fifteen years after the Peace Accords were signed, WOLA monitors the state of political democracy in El Salvador, and works to promote human rights, sustainable development and democratic reforms in the country. More recently, WOLA also began to investigate youth gangs in El Salvador and it is monitoring the implementation of the Dominican Republic- Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)
