As we prepared our trip, we sought meetings with security forces to discuss their priorities and strategies. Guatemala’s army received us (and gave us a ride in this truck). So did Mexico’s National Migration Institute—considered a security force because it is part of Mexico’s National Security Council. All others turned us down.

So most of our photos of Mexican security forces operating in the southern border zone are taken from the outside.
