The Washington Office on Latin America is deeply saddened by the loss of WOLA Board of Directors member and close friend Michael A. Maggio, a prominent immigration lawyer known for the compassion and commitment with which he represented his clients. Maggio died on Sunday at the age of 60.

“Michael showed us all what it means to be a good board member and a better person.  He believed in WOLA and joined our board to make it a stronger institution in support of human rights and social justice,” said WOLA Development Director Lori Piccolo.

Maggio was director of the WOLA board’s Development Committee. In that role, he worked tirelessly to raise funds for WOLA and make its first annual gala, in October 2007, a rousing success, even as he battled cancer.

“Michael inspired us all and was one of the most life-affirming people many of us at WOLA have ever known.  He will be missed,” said Piccolo.
