Paraguayans will vote in a presidential election on April 20 that could end the Colorado Party’s 61-year rule, the longest reign of any party currently in power in the world.
The Colorados, whose candidate Blanca Ovelar would be the country’s first woman president, face a strong challenge from Fernando Lugo, a former Catholic bishop who vows to fight social exclusion and corruption. A third contender is General Lino Oviedo, who was recently released from prison after serving time for an attempted coup.
WOLA’s Joel Fyke recently returned from a research visit to Paraguay. He will offer a pre-electoral report on the election that could mark a turning point in Paraguay’s history and bring a major new figure in South American politics to power.
Copies of WOLA’s new memo on the Paraguayan election will be available.
