WOLA Urges Justice in Murder of Honduran Labor Leader

The Washington Office on Latin America is shocked and saddened by the murder of the secretary general of the Honduras Workers Confederation (Confederación de Trabajadores de Honduras, CTH), Altagracia Fuentes, who was ambushed and killed in a car along with a former union official and their driver late Wednesday night, April 23.

WOLA condemns these heinous killings and adds its voice to those urging Honduran authorities to dedicate all necessary resources to finding and prosecuting the perpetrators.

“In Honduras, where increasing violence threatens the fragile rule of law, the government must demonstrate its resolve by doing everything within its power to bring these criminals to justice,” said Adriana Beltrán, Senior Associate for Organized Crime at WOLA.

Honduran police have said that robbery does not seem to have been the motive for the killings, as cash was found on the victims.  We note that media reports have suggested there were numerous eyewitnesses to the killings. We assume that Honduran authorities will pursue these leads.
