WOLA Senior Associate John Walsh was recently quoted in USA Today regarding the impact of declining oil prices on Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' popularity at home, and the outcome of this Sunday’s referendum where Venezuelans will decide whether elected officials, including the President, should no longer be subject to term limits. In Venezuela’s November 2008 regional elections, opposition parties scored gains in some of the country’s most populous states and cities, but candidates aligned with President Chávez still garnered the majority of ballots nationwide.

When asked about the outcome of the upcoming February 15 referendum, Walsh is quoted is saying, "In such a tight race, the outcome will probably hinge on which side has the most enthusiastic supporters."
