International Organizations Demand that the Dominican Republic Government Investigate Attack against Human Rights Defender

Last Sunday September 25, at 7:30 in the evening, Genaro Rincon, a lawyer and activist with the organization Movimiento Socio-Cultural Para Los Trabajadores Haitianos (MOSCTHA) and Derechos Vigentes was attacked, beaten, and threatened on a public bus in Santo Domingo after he was indentified as a defender of the rights of Dominicans of Haitian descent

The attack against Mr. Rincón is a troubling episode that highlights the lack of security guarantees for human rights defenders working to build Dominican Republic free of discriminatory policies. WOLA joined several international organizations calling on the Dominican government to investigate the attack against Mr. Rincón and to also guarantee safety and integrity of human rights defenders.
