WOLA Encourages Special Jurisdiction for Peace Selection Committee to Include Afro-Colombian and Indigenous Magistrates

In a letter to the Selection Committee for magistrates to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, WOLA (The Washington Office on Latin America) recommended the inclusion of Afro-Colombian and indigenous magistrates in the transitional justice system. In the letter, WOLA included a short list of candidates who we believe should be considered during the review process.

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace will constitute the justice component of a Comprehensive System of Truth, Justice, Reparation, and Non-Repetition that seeks to satisfy the victims’ rights to learn the full truth of past events, receive reparations, and obtain guarantees of non-repetition.

The U.N. Secretary-General, the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Colombia, the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Standing Committee of the State University System in Colombia and the President of the European Court of Human Rights each designated a person to serve on the Selection Committee.
