WOLA Congratulates Dr. Jo-Marie Burt on New Appointment as LASA President Elect

On June 1, 2022 Dr. JoMarie Burt, a WOLA Senior Fellow and associate professor of political science at George Mason University , assumed the role of Vice President/President Elect of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), Executive Council.

WOLA congratulates Dr. Burt for being elected to serve on the Executive Council, which is tasked with administering matters associated with LASA. As the largest professional association of individuals engaged in the study of Latin America, WOLA values the association’s role in fostering scholarship and dialogue on key issues for the region and WOLA staff and senior fellows regularly participate in LASA’s International Conference.

We are thrilled to have Dr. Burt take on this leadership role, including assuming the presidency of the Executive Council next year. As an expert on state violence, human rights and transitional justice in Latin America, Dr. Burt has played an essential role recently in monitoring Guatemala’s judicial effort to hold military personnel accountable for crimes committed during the country’s civil war and making visible the courageous work of the victims of these crimes in their pursuit of justice.
