A Night at the Movies with WOLA

WOLA partners with the American Film Institute’s annual Latin American Film Festival. Join us for screenings of the following feature films:

NN

NN is a powerful film about Peru’s attempts to come to terms with its past. Fidel leads a forensic team tasked with exhuming the remains of people who “disappeared” some 25 years earlier during the years of political violence. From a recent discovery of nine bodies, one is unidentifiable, the only clue to his past life is a photo of a woman found pinned to his body. A lonely widow is convinced it is her late husband, but the data just don’t add up. The mystery deepens as the stresses of the job bear down on the conflicted Fidel. NN won the award for Best Director at the 2015 Cartagena Film Festival.

Alias María

Alias María is an intense and riveting film that depicts Colombia’s deadly armed conflict from the perspective of a teenage soldier. María is ordered to bring her commander’s newborn baby to safety, but no one knows the secret she is hiding: she’s pregnant herself. Having a child is forbidden amongst the lower-ranked guerrillas; all pregnant soldiers are forced to have abortions so they can continue fighting. Refusing to follow that fate, María runs away, inspired by the life growing inside her. With the threat of danger constantly lurking, this unusual war film explores the devastating personal costs to those caught up in Colombia’s armed conflict. Alias María was a 2015 Cannes Film Festival Official Selection, and premiered on the opening night of the 2015 Cartagena Film Festival.
With introductory remarks by WOLA Senior Associate for Colombia Gimena Sánchez-Garzoli.
