U.S. Congress Expresses Concern over Anti-Union Violence in Colombia

On January 27, 2014, U.S. Members of Congress George Miller (D-CA), James McGovern (D-MA), and Sander Levin (D-MI) sent a letter to Colombian Attorney General Luis Eduardo Montealegre expressing concern over recent death threats against prominent trade unionists in Colombia. The letter comes weeks after SINALTACEBA trade unionist Ever Luis Marin Rolong was murdered.

Threats and murders of trade unionists remain high in Colombia, despite a U.S.-Colombia Labor Action Plan designed to address systemic labor rights issues in the country. In 2013, the letter notes, 26 trade unionists were killed; an increase over 2012. The Attorney General’s office must investigate recent threats to assure they do not come to fruition.
