4:30-5:30 PM EST Thursday, 29 February 2024
Washington, D.C.

The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) and Due Process Law Foundation (DPLF) invite you to the following hybrid event:

Accused of Money Laundering and Terrorism: Criminalizing NGOs to Close Civic Space

With:

Alí Daniels, Acceso a la Justicia

Claudia Guadamuz, International Center for Not-for-Profit Law

Ramiro Orias, Due Process of Law Foundation

Moderated by:

Laura Dib: WOLA Director for Venezuela

Different countries in the region have experienced a series of strategies by their governments to attack the work of civil society, criminalize human rights defenders and close civic space. The silence of the Venezuelan government after the publication in March 2023 of the Mutual Evaluation Report carried out by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) highlights the need to analyze it. Many of the measures against civic space in the country and the official discourse against NGOs have been based, among other reasons, on an alleged application of FATF standards in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. Please join us for a conversation on FATF and the implications it has for the closure of civic space.
