The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) cordially invites you to a hybrid event:
Chemical Reactions:
U.S.-Mexico Drug Control in the Age of Fentanyl
A decade after its arrival in U.S. street markets, illegally manufactured fentanyl continues to transform the illegal drug trade in both the United States and Mexico. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are driving record numbers of U.S. overdose deaths. For Mexican drug trafficking organizations, fentanyl combines cheap production, high potency and ease of smuggling to generate enormous profits. National elections will take place this year in both Mexico and the United States. What are the narratives and policy proposals in play on each side of the border? How should Mexican and U.S. leaders define their countries’ interests and priorities regarding fentanyl? What are the prospects for curbing fentanyl’s devastating impacts without deepening the grave harms already being caused by the decades-long “War on Drugs”?
