The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) and the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) invite you to the following hybrid event.
Climate Emergency, Displacement, and Migration: Voices and Proposals from Affected Communities and Civil Society
Climate change, natural disasters, and other factors related to the global climate emergency are triggering the forced displacement of communities throughout the hemisphere, resulting in both internal forced displacement and international migration.
In this event, we will seek to answer the questions: What are some of the experiences and needs of affected communities? What are best practices, gaps, and pending steps in the responses of governments and the international community? How can and should the international protection framework address this type of migration?
This event takes place in the framework of a thematic hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on these topics, so the participating organizations will also share the results of the Inter-American hearing.
Agenda:
Welcoming remarks and moderation: Carolina Jiménez Sandoval, President, WOLA
Introduction on the climate emergency and human rights: Viviana Krsticevic, Executive Director, CEJIL
Panelists:
Guadalupe Cobos, member of the community of El Bosque, Tabasco, Mexico (a community displaced by the impacts of the climate crisis). Organizations supporting the community’s case will also be present: Nuestro Derecho al Futuro and Conexiones Climáticas.
Louby Georges, Hemispheric Network for Haitian Migrants’ Rights (Rezo Emisferik pou Dwa Migran Ayisyen)
Marisol Aguilar Contreras, Educación Contra el Racismo (RacismoMX)
Other organizations participating in the Inter-American hearing will be available to answer questions, including: American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Amnesty International, Global Justice Clinic of NYU School of Law, HIAS, and Red Jesuita con Migrantes Latinoamérica y el Caribe (RJM LAC).
