The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), the Foundation for Due Process (DPLF), and the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) cordially invite you to an upcoming event on the importance of the attorney general election in Guatemala and its role in a democratic system, as the electoral process for next attorney general of Guatemala is currently underway.

Within Guatemala’s justice system, the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) is a fundamental body in the fight against corruption and structural impunity. Since the mandate of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) was allowed to expire in 2019, the MP assumed the challenge of continuing investigations and judicial processes against complex criminal networks that reached nearly all levels of state activity. However, since Attorney General Maria Consuelo Porras has taken office, there have been severe setbacks: the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (FECI) has been dismantled, independent prosecutors and judges against corruption have been criminalized, and important investigations have been halted.

The electoral process for the attorney general of Guatemala, which began in February 2022 and continues advancing, is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of an independent attorney general and on the role of the public prosecutor’s office in a democracy, as well as the level of commitment to democracy that whomever is elected to lead the institution has.

With this objective, WOLA, DPLF, and CEJIL are pleased to invite you to a conversation on these topics with three experts from the region next Tuesday March 29, 2022, at 12pm CT / 2pm EDT. This discussion will aim to draw on experiences in Latin America to provide valuable reflections and lessons that will enrich the debate surrounding the attorney general elections in Guatemala.
