WOLA: Advocacy for Human Rights in the Americas

U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement and Labor Rights

For years, Colombia has led the world in anti-union violence, and labor rights violations have only increased since the 2012 implementation of a free trade agreement between the United States and Colombia. Domestic and international companies continue to subvert workers’ efforts to form unions and advocate for their rights, and government practices have done little to curb widespread violations. WOLA works with labor leaders in Colombia to ensure that workers’ rights are respected and state policies effectively identify and punish violations of these rights.
