Civilians and Social Leaders Require Protection in Colombia

Despite ongoing calls for “Total Peace” in the region, human rights abuses continue throughout Colombia. Particularly in rural areas, communities are being displaced and or confined because of the increased violence and confrontations between armed groups. Additionally, human rights defenders and social leaders continue receiving threats. The document below details the incidents of human rights violations WOLA received from January to March of 2023.

We urge U.S. policymakers to raise concerns about the security and humanitarian situation with the Colombian government summarized below. As the U.S. continues to develop its role as an accompanier to the Ethnic Chapter of the 2016 Peace Accord, we urge that U.S. policymakers continue their commitment to advancing a strategic implementation of the Ethnic Chapter that guarantees the protection of leaders, defenders, and communities for peace.
