WOLA in Honduras
Honduras is among the poorest countries in Latin America, facing severe violence and one of the world’s highest murder rates, primarily driven by organized crime and gang activity. Human rights defenders, particularly environmental activists, frequently face violence and harassment amid deep-rooted institutional weaknesses and a fragile rule of law. Women, Garifuna and indigenous communities, and members of LGBTQIA+ communities are disproportionately affected by these threats.
WOLA collaborates closely with civil society, multi-sector stakeholders, and U.S. policymakers to advocate for reforms that reduce corruption, promote accountability, and enhance public security. We also address the perilous conditions driving migration, advocating for the protection and rights of migrants and refugees originating from Honduras or transiting through the country to reach the U.S.
