WOLA in Mexico
WOLA works to advance human rights and strengthen the rule of law by advocating for policies that improve access to justice, prevent rights violations, and foster inclusive democracy. We advocate for U.S. cooperation and engagement that supports these aims.
The country continues to face high levels of violence and insecurity, particularly linked to organized criminal groups, widespread corruption and impunity, and a deepening crisis of disappearances. Successive governments have deepened the militarization of policing tasks and other civilian roles, a strategy that endangers human rights and accountability while failing to address existing deficiencies in security and justice institutions. Marginalized groups, including women and LGBTQIA+ individuals, face intersecting forms of discrimination and structural inequality, while migrants and asylum seekers arriving in, crossing, or intending to migrate north from Mexico are often subjected to violence and extortion.
WOLA collaborates with Mexican civil society organizations to address these issues, advocating for effective and accountable civilian institutions that ensure security and protect human rights. At the U.S.-Mexico border and throughout Mexico, WOLA calls for migration policies that respect the rights and dignity of people on the move, promoting U.S.-Mexico cooperation that advances human rights and strengthens the rule of law.
