WOLA in Guatemala
In Guatemala, systemic corruption, political instability, and a lack of judicial independence continue to undermine democracy. The political landscape faces significant challenges from entrenched political elites resistant to meaningful reform. The judiciary is compromised, with increasing cases of influence-peddling, harassment, and criminalization of journalists and human rights defenders.
WOLA advocates for restoring judicial independence and strengthening the rule of law, emphasizing accountability for past atrocities and ongoing human rights violations, especially against indigenous groups. We also call for U.S. and international support for anti-corruption efforts and the protection of those leading them, as well as justice for marginalized communities affected by systemic injustices, with a particular focus on gender and racial justice.
