WOLA in Nicaragua
WOLA focuses on addressing the escalating repression and closure of civic space in Nicaragua. The dismantling of democratic institutions and suppression of political opposition and civil society have led to widespread human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and deprivation of nationality. Journalists, human rights defenders, political activists, religious leaders, and others face constant persecution, forcing many into exile. Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities are also targeted, suffering violence and displacement.
WOLA advocates for the restoration of democracy, the protection of human rights, and accountability for government abuses. We call for U.S. and international pressure to support Nicaraguan civil society in its struggle for freedom and justice amidst entrenched authoritarianism and ongoing threats to political, social, and economic freedoms.
