Democratic Coexistence Must be Respected in Colombia’s Political Transition

We are deeply concerned by the delicate situation unfolding in Colombia. The National Civil Registry, the National Electoral Council, the European Union Election Observation Mission, the Carter Center, and other independent observers have recognized the results of Colombia’s presidential election and President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella’s victory. As we affirmed prior to the elections, if credible evidence of wrongdoing exists, it should be presented through the appropriate electoral and judicial channels. Allegations aired on social media without substantiation only inflame already heightened political tensions and risk eroding public confidence in Colombia’s democratic institutions.

Likewise, President Petro’s inflammatory rhetoric towards de la Espriella and the president-elect’s rhetoric toward his political opponents are both causes for concern. The responsibility of democratic leaders is not only to win elections but also to safeguard the institutions that allow political competition to occur peacefully. As Colombia prepares for a transition of power, it is incumbent upon the incoming government to govern on behalf of all Colombians and to recognize the opposition as a legitimate political actor, not an enemy to be defeated. Democratic stability depends not only on respecting election results, but also on preserving the democratic norms of pluralism, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. We urge all political leaders to lower the temperature, reject incendiary rhetoric, and address their differences through dialogue, respect, and democratic institutions.
