Similar to the United States and Argentina, Brazil experienced an erosion of rights protection for women and LGBTQ people during the Bolsonaro Administration. Top of the global anti-rights agenda is the scapegoating of Trans persons. According to the National Association of Transvestites and Transgender People (ANTRA), 80 transgender persons were murdered in 2025. While this was a 34% drop from 2024 (112), Brazil remains the country where most trans people are killed.
The resumption of President Lula’s term in office has helped to turn around the anti-rights agenda. However, the outcome of the October 8 Presidential elections will determine whether these efforts are sustained in the long run. The country remains highly polarized, with a sector that strongly opposes the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
In conjunction with the Coalition for Gender Equality (CGE) and the International Institute for Race & Equality, we will host a conversation with Brazilian activists fighting the anti-rights agenda on the frontlines: Bruna Benevides of ANTRA, Gilmara Cunha of Conexao G, Vidda Guzzo of Intersexo Brasil, Luana Barbosa of Pajuba Tech, and Victória Dandara of the CGE. They will provide an update on Trans Rights in Brazil, access to justice, data collection regarding human rights violations, anti-gender politics, and its geopolitical impacts.
English translation will be provided.
