Pedro Cortes will present the main findings of the International Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights just released a report titled “Afrocolombian Men and Women after the accord.” In this, he analyzes the impact of the armed conflict on afrocolombian communities, the Ethnic Chapter and provides detailed recommendations for how to implement the peace accord in a manner that guarantees a differentiated approach for afrocolombians.
Pedro is the Colombia Representative for the International Institute on Race, and Equality. As such, he is responsible for coordinating the Institute’s activities in Colombia, which focus on strengthening the advocacy capacity of Afro-Colombian, LGBTI and human rights organizations. He also supports the Institute’s training and research activities in the region. For 12 years prior to IRRE, Pedro worked to support the Afro-Colombian movement with the National Association of Internally Displaced Afro-Colombians (AFRODES). Pedro played a central role in supporting AFRODES’ first actions before the Inter-American Human Rights Commission and the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Pedro is a PhD candidate at Howard University where he attended as a Fulbright Scholar from the Colombian Program for Afro-descendant Leaders. His doctoral dissertation is a comparative analysis of the international advocacy campaigns on human rights abuses concerning Brazilian and Colombian Afro-descendant communities.
