Human rights violations in the region have risen dramatically in recent years. While human rights violations perpetrated by the police and armed forces continue to be common in Central America, human rights violations of civil society actors, members of the independent press, judicial officials, and indigenous and afro-descendent leaders by both state and non-state officials are of increasing concern.
