Join the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) for the second event in a four-part series that brings together experts across the region to examine the Trump administration’s Latin America policy and its consequences for human rights and democracy.
On Wednesday, July 29 at 11:00 a.m. EDT, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) will hold the second of four panels with experts in the region exploring the Trump administration’s profound impact on human rights and democracy throughout Latin America—and imagining alternative, human rights-respecting approaches to U.S. foreign policy. The panel tackles how political elites and corrupt actors within and outside governments have taken measures to roll back anti-corruption efforts and further weaken the rule of law.
Throughout the region, corrupt actors are jeopardizing the independence of the judiciary, politicizing the selection process of judges, and limiting the ability of the courts to review the constitutionality of executive decisions while simultaneously being praised by the Trump administration for their strong leadership. At a time when strengthening Latin American democracies, rule of law initiatives, and anti-corruption efforts are imperative in the face of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, the Trump administration’s policies and its failure to act in the face of gross abuses in Latin America have weakened protections for human rights and democracy. Future events will explore how the Trump administration has threatened democratic norms and closed civic space, and endangered human mobility and migration.
