On Wednesday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m. EDT, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) will hold the final panel in its four-part series exploring the Trump administration’s profound impact on human rights and democracy throughout Latin America—and imagining alternative, human rights-respecting approaches to U.S. foreign policy. Migration in the region has soared in recent years, with the U.S.-Mexico border and Venezuela becoming hotspots. The Trump administration has responded by promoting policies that endanger the lives of migrants. It has threatened Mexico into adopting harsher migration enforcement policies, reached safe third country agreements with Central American countries that are anything but safe, and used the COVID-19 pandemic as a pretext for ending the right to asylum at the border. Additionally the Trump administration has abdicated its leadership in encouraging a multilateral response to Venezuelan displacement. Since 2019, countries such as Ecuador and Peru have imposed visa restrictions making it difficult for Venezuelan migrants, who are fleeing dire circumstances, to gain entry and regular status abroad. The COVID crisis has justified the indefinite closing of borders, forcing Venezuelan migrants to either return home or flee through informal crossing points.
