WOLA: Advocacy for Human Rights in the Americas
Vice President for Communications

Mario Moreno

Mario Moreno is the Vice President for Communications at the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), a role in which he oversees communications strategy, messaging, and advocacy campaigns for the organization. He manages WOLA’s relationships with the media, and works closely with program staff on finding creative ways to secure progress on critical human rights issues throughout Latin America.

Mr. Moreno has nearly a decade of experience working in communications, research, and advocacy. Most recently, he was the Press Secretary at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), where he helped implement communications plans that helped move approaches to drug policy away from public security efforts, and towards public health initiatives. In addition to working at ONDCP, he’s managed digital communications at the National Immigration Forum, worked on Spanish language digital initiatives on the 2012 Obama campaign, and conducted extensive research in the region — including long stints in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico.

Mr. Moreno holds two degrees — a BA in Political Science from Duke University, and an MSc in Computational Analysis and Public Policy from the University of Chicago. His graduate work sought to connect data science and data visualization techniques with public policy outcomes — with a specific focus on organized crime, migration, and public health outcomes in Latin America.

He is a former WOLA intern.
