Los de atrás vienen conmigo

Hemispheric and global debates over drug policy have new momentum, with a more independent-minded and assertive Latin America at center stage. With wider discussion of alternative drug policies unfolding in countries across the region and in multilateral fora, WOLA is pleased to initiate a new series of essays with a paper by Milton Romani Gerner, Uruguay’s Special Ambassador for Drug Policy and Human Rights.

In “Los de atrás vienen conmigo” (available only in Spanish), Ambassador Romani challenges Latin American civil society and political leadership to connect drug policy reform to broader agendas of development and social inclusion.

The paper provides an apt beginning for our new essay series, On the Table: Deepening Democratic Debate over Drug Policy in Latin America. By inviting reflection and critical discussion, the essay series will aim to enrich and inform the debates now underway, helping point toward more humane and effective drug policies.
