Last month’s protests in Cuba captured international attention for the large groups that took to the street to express frustration over the country’s economic troubles and the public health concerns provoked by COVID-19, which has overwhelmed the country’s medical system.
This week, Adam is joined by Mariakarla Nodarse Venancio, WOLA’s new Assistant Director for Cuba, and Lizabelt Avila, WOLA’s Assistant Director for Partnerships and an politically engaged member of the Cuban American community, to discuss the triggers of recent protests, contextualize Cuba’s economic troubles and attempts at reform, consequences that protestors have faced, and what steps the Biden administration can take to support the Cuban people (spoiler: it is not continuing the embargo).
