The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) invites you to the following online event:

The Past, Present, and Future of the Fight for Gender and Racial Justice in the Americas

From Green Waves to the inclusion of women, gender, LGBTI rights, and the Ethnic Chapter in Colombia’s peace accords, recent years offer numerous examples in which the feminist movement, victims’ collectives, and people historically marginalized for their identities have won both policy and social victories. Yet violence against women, racial discrimination, and other gendered and racialized human rights violations continue at alarming levels. Meanwhile, even emblematic victories are not immune to setbacks following changes in power, especially amid growing examples of authoritarian tendencies and democratic backsliding in the region.

As WOLA marks its 50th anniversary with a series of events to reflect on the past, present, and future of the struggle for human rights and social justice in our hemisphere, join us and three of our partners for a discussion on the fight for gender and racial justice throughout the region. Panelists from different countries will help us take stock of realities on the ground today, the significance of advances and setbacks in recent years, and how to address the evolving challenges to the feminist and racial justice movements going forward.

With panelists:

Luz Marina Becerra, La Comadre (Colombia)

Altagracia Jean Joseph, Fundación Código Humano (Dominican Republic)

Quiteria Franco, Union Afirmativa (Venezuela)

Moderated by:

Sienna Woo, Venezuela Program Assistant & Ana Lucia Verduzco, Mexico and Migration/Border Security Program Assistant at WOLA
